BOSTON GLOBE
Boston designers Steve Osemwenkhae and Mayan Tamang are among those trying to keep the campaign’s inspirational message alive. After the inauguration, they released a shirt of Obama labeled “Outstanding.”
“‘Outstanding’ means people should be standing out, standing proud, proud of who we are and where we’re going,” Osemwenkhae said. “Hopefully, he can take us to an outstanding era.”
Tamang, an immigrant’s son of Nepalese and Tibetan descent, believes the message resonates with streetwear’s young, urban, and racially and culturally diverse community.
“For someone from a mixed background, that power of travel and living around mother earth allows him to understand,” Tamang said. “He seems like the kind of dude who could sit around the fire with my tribe in Nepal.”
With their design since sold out, Tamang and Osemwenkhae are now considering new designs, confident the market will continue well into Obama’s presidency.
